Yellow for Cory

When I heard that she had died my reaction was that a hole suddenly opened itself somewhere.

I wore yellow to work and some snickered "Ah Cory!" and I was like, why not? There is much to be admired of a Cory Aquino. "But were you even born during the People Power?"

I was born in the last years of the martial law era. Young as I was, I was already a little bit aware of what was going on around me. How could we not, when the adults often spoke of the recent killings at Nicaragdao? How could we not, when we'd often hear of the word "rebel". In my elementary years, I went to a school known for its activism. I still remember that time when one afternoon as we were having a class, we heard the sound of gunfire. Our teacher made us pray as me and my classmates crouched under the desks. Later the school made us go home. When I got home, my Mom told us that the military wanted to enter our school because they want to flush out the rebels who allegedly there were hiding inside the campus. My mom said that one of the military men yanked my little brother's bag for any thing which might have been concealed by the alleged rebels. She got angry thinking my brother might become traumatized. Come to think of it, maybe what happened is the reason why my brother is very cynical of police and military men.

Were it not for her heroic deed I don't what other things could have happened after that incident.

Thank you President Cory for the lifetime of sacrifice for the love of the Pinoy people.
