Dose of Our Medicine

Youtube sure has a lot of titles referring to Teri Hatcher's racial slur. One title went like this, "Teri Hatcher insults Filipino Doctors..." Since she was the one who delivered the line, naturally all insults and ire were hurled at her. Hmmm should it only be her? We should add to the list, the scriptwriter or writers and the producers of the show. I've been hearing a lot of complaints and resolutions for the show like calls for a public apology to deleting that scene. As a Filipino who works hard to pass my subjects I sure had my share of negative reactions. However, there are nagging questions on mind, "Why that line?" I mean what made the writer think of such a line? What has he or she heard about our medical schools to say such? Why was the Philippines singled out? Weren't the scriptwriter/s or producers aware that a lot of hospitals in the US alone are manned by Filipino doctors and nurses? Considering how strict their government is with entry, I don't think they would stupidly allow entry if they thought Filipino Medical Professionals were incompetent. So why? Anyone?

On the other hand, didn't our own Senator Miriam Santiago bashed the Chinese just recently? Saying that China "invented corruption for all human civilization." Dose of our own medicine? Hmmm, whatever.

The lesson Tweedledee is that no matter how highly civilized we consider ourselves to be, no matter how high the technology we can use to learn of other cultures, we can't deny the fact that racial descrimination is not dead. I myself could be guilty of that with or without my knowledge. =)
